Another big win for anime this weekend as Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc cut through the competition to take the top spot at the box office.

The film earned an impressive $17.2 million from 3,003 theaters across North America, according to reports. This marks the second box office success in a row for Crunchyroll, following September’s surprise hit Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, which opened with a record-breaking $70 million.

While it didn’t reach the same massive numbers, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc still went beyond expectations.

It managed to outpace Disney and 20th Century’s Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, Paramount’s romantic drama Regretting You, and last weekend’s horror hit Black Phone 2 from Universal and Blumhouse.

The movie is a Japanese animated dark fantasy action film based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s popular manga Chainsaw Man. It was produced by MAPPA, directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, and written by Hiroshi Seko.

The story continues right after the first season of the anime and adapts the manga’s fifth and sixth volumes. The film also features storyboards by Daisuke Tokudo, Masato Nakazono, Sōta Shigetsugu, Takuya Niinuma, Tatsuya Yoshihara, and Yuzuru Tachikawa.

Released in Japan on September 19 by Toho, the film later made its way to global audiences through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Releasing.

It rolled out in select Asian markets starting September 24 and hit theaters worldwide by October 24. So far, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has made around $77 million worldwide and continues to earn praise from both fans and critics.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a strong 96% approval rating from 25 critics, while Metacritic gave it a score of 72 out of 100, meaning generally favorable reviews. Many reviewers praised its animation, intense action, and emotional storytelling.

Richard Eisenbeis from Anime News Network gave the movie an A grade, saying its animation, visuals, and music stood out. He added that Denji and Reze’s bittersweet love story makes the movie “worth-watched.”

IndieWire’s Wilson Chapman also had positive words for the film, giving it a B+. He admired the animation, characters, and voice acting, saying “it’s one of the best films in the recent crop of anime TV expansions, and its bittersweet teen love story is certainly potent enough to make you cry.”

With both strong reviews and solid ticket sales, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc shows that anime continues to grow as a major force at the global box office.
