Colin Farrell has shared his thoughts on the long-stalled DC movie Sgt. Rock, and it seems he still hopes the film will eventually happen.

The project was planned as a World War II story where Sgt. Rock, a battle-hardened soldier, teams up with a French resistance fighter to find the Spear of Destiny before the Nazis do. DC Studios producer Peter Safran once described it as a gritty war film about courage and conflict.

Back in late 2024, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes finished the script, and director Luca Guadagnino and actor Daniel Craig were in talks to lead the film after their work on Queer (2024).

At the time, DC Studios was said to be very confident in the script and hoped Sgt. Rock would be Guadagnino’s next movie before he moved on to an American Psycho adaptation. But by early 2025, Craig stepped away from the role, reportedly because of scheduling issues and the mixed response to Queer.

Colin Farrell then entered discussions to take over the role that spring, but filming was paused only a few weeks later due to location issues. By midyear, DC Studios co-head James Gunn admitted the movie wasn’t ready to move forward creatively. Guadagnino also left the project around the same time.

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Farrell was asked about the film’s status and said, “God, that was a fantastic script. I wonder what’s happening with it.”

When Horowitz mentioned that it might not be as appealing without Guadagnino directing, Farrell replied, “I know nothing about it, brother. I was going to do it with Luca. We spoke about it a couple of times and had some really nice chats. I have no idea where it is now, but it should be made. It’s really, really good. There’s some wonderful stuff in it.”

However, it doesn’t sound like DC Studios shares that same excitement. Gunn previously explained that after several rewrites, the script just wasn’t working. “It wasn’t getting better. It was staying in the same place,” he said. “We can’t make this film. It’s not good. We know it’s not good. Just because we have a good director and a good writer doesn’t mean the script is working.”

Gunn added that moving ahead with the project would have been a mistake: “Everyone is going to be upset at the end of this. The director’s going to look bad, the screenwriter’s going to look bad, and we’re going to look bad. So we killed it.”

Right now, Sgt. Rock is officially off DC’s schedule. Farrell may still believe it deserves a shot, but for now, the project remains one of several DC movies stuck in development limbo.
