Netflix and Sony are officially moving forward with a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the hit animated musical that became Netflix’s most-watched original film.

TheWrap reports that the follow-up is planned for a 2029 release, and the original directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, are returning to lead the project.

The first KPop Demon Hunters premiered in June and quickly broke records, reaching over 325 million views in just three months.

The movie, set in Seoul but featuring English dialogue, follows three K-pop stars whose songs give them the power to fight demons. Its music and unique story made it a global hit, drawing audiences of all ages and boosting interest in Korean pop culture internationally.

Both directors have expressed excitement about expanding the story. Maggie Kang told Screen Rant that “there are a lot of pockets that we can explore,” pointing to potential backstories for characters like Mira and Zoey. Chris Appelhans added to People, “there are so many unanswered questions, in a good way, and so many avenues that could be their own story.”

Netflix has been considering several ways to expand the KPop Demon Hunters universe, including additional sequels, a TV series, a short film, and even a stage musical.

Netflix Films chairman Dan Lin told Newsweek, “KPop Demon Hunters’ success comes from its original, fresh story so if we do embark on a sequel, we would want to take our time to make sure that any future stories we tell with our favorite demon hunters retains the flair and uniqueness of the first film.”

Under a 2021 deal between Sony and Netflix, Sony has the rights to produce future installments, but all sequels are expected to be released directly on Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the studios are in active talks, and the sequel is now officially planned for 2029.

In addition to the feature films, Sony’s LENS mentorship program is also producing a short film set in the same universe. Titled Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story, it was rated PG by the MPA in September.

The success of KPop Demon Hunters shows the growing global appetite for stories that mix music, action, and vibrant animation. This sequel gives fans something exciting to look forward to while expanding the world of the first film.
