“Christy,” the 2025 sports drama starring Sydney Sweeney, had a rough start at the box office.

Directed by David Michôd and written by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, the film tells the story of former professional boxer Christy Martin.

It follows her rise to fame in the 1990s as one of America’s most famous female boxers and later covers the shocking 2010 attempted murder by her coach-turned-husband. The movie also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, in the Special Presentations section and was released in theaters nationwide on November 7, by Black Bear Pictures.

“Christy” opened on over 2,000 screens across North America, but early numbers show it struggled with audiences. According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned only $600,000 on its opening Friday from 2,184 theaters. This put it at #10 in the domestic box office rankings and pointed toward a disappointing $3 million weekend.

In an interview back in June, Sydney Sweeney talked about how she prepared for the role. “I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” she said. Her effort to transform physically for the role has been praised, but it didn’t seem to help the movie attract a large audience.

Overall, despite the high-profile cast and inspiring true story, “Christy” has had one of the weakest openings ever for a film released in more than 2,000 theaters.
