DC Studios is officially moving forward with its first Superman spinoff, and this one will focus on Jimmy Olsen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has brought in American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to develop the series. The pair will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunners for the project.

The new show will star Skyler Gisondo, who played Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn’s Superman. His version of the character quickly became a fan favorite despite limited screen time.

In the movie, Jimmy, a photographer for the Daily Planet, ends up playing an unexpected role in saving the day. He also shares a complicated history with Eve Teschmacher, who works for Lex Luthor and happens to be his ex-girlfriend.

The upcoming series will follow Jimmy and other Daily Planet reporters as they investigate cases involving super-powered criminals, according to THR. Lois Lane and Clark Kent won’t be part of the show’s main lineup.

The first season is said to feature Gorilla Grodd as the central villain. Grodd is a highly intelligent, telepathic ape who rules over Gorilla City, a hidden metropolis in Africa. The character was first introduced in The Flash comics back in 1959 by John Broome and Carmine Infantino.

James Gunn and Peter Safran will also executive produce the show, with Galen Vaisman overseeing the project for DC Studios.

Even before this announcement, there had already been rumors that DC was developing two spinoffs from Gunn’s Superman movie, one centered on Jimmy Olsen that has now been confirmed, and another focusing on Edi Gathegi’s character, Mr. Terrific.

Reports from insiders have also hinted that the Jimmy Olsen series might not follow the usual superhero formula.

Instead, it’s expected to take on more of a crime anthology style, where each story deals with different villains and cases from across the DC Universe. This approach could give fans a chance to see some of the lesser-known bad guys and explore darker corners of the DC world.
