Steven Spielberg Wrote a Role for Colman Domingo in His Next Film — “I Read the Script and Burst Into Tears”
Steven Spielberg’s next movie is already creating buzz, especially because of one of its stars, Colman Domingo. The actor revealed that Spielberg personally wrote a role for him in the upcoming science fiction film that’s set to hit theaters in June 2026.
Domingo, who once played a small but important part in Spielberg’s 2012 film Lincoln, says this new opportunity feels deeply personal.
“I read the script immediately and burst into tears, because I think there is so much humanity in it,” he shared. “And that’s ultimately the most I can share: it’s about the possibilities of what we can be when we truly make deeper contact and connections with each other.”
Spielberg’s new project, which is still untitled, comes from a story idea he created himself. The script was written by David Koepp, who has worked with Spielberg several times before. Universal Pictures will release the film in the U.S. on June 12, 2026.
The cast includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, and Colman Domingo. Several other names have also joined the project, such as Noah Robbins, Chavo Guerrero Jr., Lance Archer, Brian Cage, Gabby Beans, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Michael Gaston, Elliot Villar, Tommy Martinez, and Patricia Conolly.
Production began in February and wrapped up a few months later in May. Filming took place in several U.S. locations, including New Jersey, New York, and Atlanta. The movie was filmed under the working title Non-View. There were casting calls for extras to appear as wrestling fans, hotel guests, diner customers, and even North Korean soldiers.
Costume designer Paul Tazewell, who previously worked on West Side Story with Spielberg, returned for this film. Music legend John Williams is also on board, marking his 30th collaboration with Spielberg, a partnership that has defined some of the most iconic movie scores of all time.
For Domingo, this film is another step in a career built on passion and versatility. He says he loves working across different creative fields. “I’ve never been a person who could just do one thing. My whole career has been that way, and I find that I’m a stronger actor because I direct, a stronger director because I act, a stronger writer because of all of it,” he explained.
He also reflected on where his drive comes from. “Maybe it’s something that goes back to my ancestors. I’m a descendant of people who were enslaved. How did they survive? They didn’t just fight — they loved, danced, sang. They had lots of s**. They were courageous, curious — and I feel that. We can do it all.”
Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi film remains under wraps, but with this creative team and heartfelt performances expected from its cast, it’s already one of 2026’s most anticipated releases.
