Sabrina Carpenter to Lead and Produce New Musical ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for Universal
Sabrina Carpenter is set to take the lead in a new musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland for Universal Pictures. The project will also see Carpenter serve as a producer, making it a personal passion project for the pop star.
Lorene Scafaria, known for writing and directing the hit movie Hustlers, has been tapped to write and direct the feature. The film will be produced by Marc Platt, who is famous for bringing Broadway musicals like Wicked to the screen.
Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment, the company behind shows such as Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, are also producing.
Sources say Carpenter approached Universal about a year ago with her ideas and a lookbook for the project. As the concept developed, Scafaria and the producers joined in to help bring the vision to life.
The project is being overseen by Universal’s senior vice president of production development, Ryan Jones, and director of production development, Jacqueline Garell. Katie McNicol is guiding the project for Marc Platt Productions.
She is deeply involved in shaping the story and the look of the film, ensuring it reflects her creative vision.
