‘Death Stranding’ is Coming to Disney+ as a Show: Here’s All the Details
Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game series Death Stranding is getting a new life as an animated show on Disney+.
The announcement came during Disney’s Asia Pacific originals content showcase in Hong Kong, where Kojima revealed the series, currently titled Death Stranding Isolations, is expected to arrive on the streaming service in 2027.
Death Stranding, first released in 2019 by Kojima Productions, quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its cinematic storytelling and complex world-building.
The game starred actors like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Margaret Qualley. A sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, launched in June for PlayStation 5, and a feature film adaptation from A24 is also in development.
Kojima will serve as executive producer for the new animated project. He appeared alongside director Takayuki Sano, known for works like Bullet/Bullet and Gridman Universe, and unveiled new concept art by Ilya Kuvshinov, famous for his work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Speaking through a translator, Kojima described the series as “pretty mind-blowing” and emphasized that animation gives him freedom to explore ideas impossible in live-action. “It will have new and different characters,” he added.

Kojima explained that Disney approached him about the project after they collaborated on the 2023 documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds. He said his goal was to share Death Stranding with people who might not play video games. The series will use a traditional hand-drawn 2D animation style and is being produced by E&H Production, one of Japan’s leading animation studios.
Disney+ provided a short description of the story, saying, “Set in the world of Death Stranding, Death Stranding Isolations (working title) will tell a completely new story, separate from that of the video games. The upcoming series will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure.”
This expansion shows Kojima’s commitment to growing the Death Stranding universe beyond gaming, giving fans more ways to experience its unique world.
