Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is bringing one of the world’s oldest epic tales to the big screen with his new film, The Odyssey. The movie is an action-fantasy adaptation of Homer’s classic poem, following King Odysseus as he faces a dangerous journey home after the Trojan War.

Matt Damon takes on the role of Odysseus, striving to reunite with his wife, Penelope, and reclaim his kingdom. The film features a star-studded ensemble including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. Nolan is producing the film alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, under their company Syncopy.

Universal Pictures officially announced the project in December 2024. Nolan began writing the script in March 2024, and by October had finalized a deal with the studio. Damon was confirmed as the lead in February. Filming ran from February to August 2025 across multiple international locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara.

With an estimated production budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is Nolan’s most expensive film to date. The movie is also notable for being his first project filmed entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, promising a visually striking experience.

Recently, Empire magazine released a “new look” at the movie, showcasing exclusive artwork and giving fans an early glimpse at the scale and ambition of the project.
