Fans of The Goonies have reason to be excited as Ke Huy Quan shared the latest news on the long-awaited sequel. In January of this year, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. was exploring a sequel and waiting for a treatment from writer Chris Columbus. At the time, nothing had been officially confirmed by the studio.

In February, some of the original cast reunited with Chris Columbus to celebrate Quan receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

When asked about a sequel, Quan said, “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life. I would love for it to happen.” Fellow cast member Corey Feldman added, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”

Shortly after, on February 14, it was officially announced that The Goonies 2 is in development. Potsy Ponciroli is set to write the script, with Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, and Chris Columbus producing for Amblin Entertainment. Lauren Shuler Donner is on board as an executive producer.

Speaking with ComicBook during promotion for Zootopia 2, Quan revealed that a second draft of the script has already been submitted. “I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event and he was so excited,” Quan said.

“We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it. This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I mean, I read he turned in the second draft and they’re really happy about it. I was telling Fortune (Feimster, Zootopia 2 co-star), I said we’re gonna do it. I want her to be in it.”

Quan also expressed his excitement about returning to his role as Richard “Data” Wang. “I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters,” he said.

With the original cast reunited and a strong creative team behind it, fans have reason to be hopeful that The Goonies 2 could finally become a reality.
