Talk around a second F1 film has been growing ever since the first movie became a major box office hit. Variety was the first to report that a follow-up was being discussed, and the Financial Times later mentioned that Apple might even build a full franchise from it.

The buzz got stronger when Tim Cook spoke with Variety during the 2025 Emmy Awards and confirmed that the idea is on the table. He said, “It’s definitely something that’s being talked about; it’s been such a huge summer blockbuster for us, we’re so proud of it,” and he praised the cast, highlighting Brad Pitt’s performance.

The movie made a big impact when it arrived in theaters, pulling in strong reviews and audience reactions. It helped bring Formula 1 to mainstream moviegoers in a way that felt fresh, and it showed that racing stories can draw a wide crowd.

Director Joseph Kosinski has now added his voice to the conversation. He said that discussions about what comes next are already happening. He explained, “We’re in that stage, we’re just kind of dreaming up what the next chapter for Sonny Hayes and APXGP would be. But you know, based on the reaction from around the world to this movie, you know it’s something that people wanna see, I’d be happy to go back and do it because we had so much fun making this one.”

The first film starred Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a driver who returns to Formula 1 after decades away. It was directed by Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, with support from actors like Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem.

Production began in 2023 and even took place at real F1 race weekends with help from the FIA and several teams. Lewis Hamilton was also involved behind the scenes as a producer.

When the movie premiered in June, it became one of the biggest releases of the year. It earned more than $600 million worldwide and set new highs for both Apple Studios and Brad Pitt’s career. Audience scores were strong across several platforms, and critics gave the film positive marks for its racing sequences and overall style.

With that level of success, it’s easy to see why Apple and the filmmakers are thinking about keeping the story going.
