Christopher Nolan’s new movie The Odyssey is getting closer to release, and Empire magazine has now shared fresh images from the film.

The new photos highlight Matt Damon as Odysseus and show a large battle scene from the epic story. These pictures give the first real look at how Nolan is bringing the ancient tale to life.

The film is Nolan’s take on Homer’s classic story. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who tries to make his way home after the Trojan War.

His journey forces him to face dangerous creatures and powerful forces while trying to return to his wife, Penelope. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, with Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and many others filling out the cast.

Nolan started working on the script in early 2024 and later partnered with Universal Pictures to make the movie. Filming took place across several countries, including Greece, Morocco, Italy, Scotland, and Iceland.

The movie has a reported budget of around 250 million dollars, making it the most expensive film Nolan has ever directed. It is also his first project shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras.

Nolan has said he was drawn to Odysseus because of how layered the character is. He described him as “an amazing strategist, [and] a very wily person” and said he was interested in showing that clever and complicated side of the hero on screen.

The movie is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026. Universal even released IMAX 70mm tickets a full year early, and many of those early showings sold out within hours.

Empire’s new images of Damon and the large battle scene show how big the scale of this movie really is. With its cast, scope, and visual style, it looks like Nolan is aiming to deliver one of his most ambitious films yet.
