Jon Favreau Confirms: ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 4 Is Already Written
Fans of The Mandalorian have spent a long time guessing what would happen next, especially after talk shifted toward the movie The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Now things are a bit clearer thanks to Jon Favreau, the creator of the series. He spoke with Empire Magazine and shared information that shows the story isn’t as finished as people thought.
Favreau said that Season 4 was fully planned out before the movie became the big focus. He explained to Empire that he already wrote the entire season and kept it intact.
He said, “We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here.” This makes it clear that the fourth season wasn’t thrown away or merged into the film.
He also explained how the film came together in a totally different way. Instead of taking TV episodes and turning them into a movie, the team started fresh. Favreau told Empire, “It’s structured around a movie structure, as opposed to a serialized weekly television show. So there’s a larger throw to the whole thing.” Because of this, the film and the unused season exist as two separate pieces of the story.
Even with the season written, it doesn’t mean it will ever be made. Reports from early 2023 suggested that Disney wanted Lucasfilm to move faster on movies. Since then, the company has clearly focused on film projects instead of more Mandalorian episodes.
Lucasfilm officially announced The Mandalorian and Grogu in January 2024. Favreau is directing the film and co-writing it with Dave Filoni, and both of them are producing it with Kathleen Kennedy. Filming started in August 2024, and the movie is set to come out on May 22, 2026. Characters like Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, the Anzellan species, and a new Razor Crest appear in the movie, continuing the world built in the series.
