Benedict Cumberbatch Hints at His MCU Return in True Doctor Strange Fashion
enedict Cumberbatch is once again talking about his future as Doctor Strange, and this time, his comments give fans real hope.
While he could not reveal many details, he did share that he has a clear idea of what comes next for him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He said he “has more than a sense” of his MCU future and promised that audiences “definitely will” see Doctor Strange again. This update comes from recent interviews and marks the first strong hint in a while that the character’s story is far from over.
The main question now is not if Doctor Strange will return, but when he will show up again. Cumberbatch has appeared recently in Marvel’s animated Disney+ show What If…?, but many believe his next major moment will be on the big screen.
Marvel already has several big projects lined up, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Reports have suggested that Cumberbatch is not expected to appear in Doomsday, but he has been strongly rumored to play a major part in Secret Wars. That idea makes sense, since the movie is expected to close out the Multiverse Saga and bring many heroes together.
Still, with the multiverse in play, the timing of Doctor Strange’s return is unpredictable. The character could appear almost anywhere in the MCU timeline. One thing seems certain, though: he will be back.
Cumberbatch also talked about the future of the Doctor Strange films themselves. In January of this year, he shared that he expects to return for a third movie. He spoke highly of Marvel Studios, explaining that they have already talked with him about who he would like to write and direct the film, as well as which comic book ideas he wants to explore.
