CD Projekt Red is aiming high with its plans for the next Witcher trilogy. The studio has confirmed that all three games, starring Ciri, are expected to release within a six-year window.

During a recent financial call, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski explained that the company wants to speed up development for the new series. This push is possible because the team is using Unreal Engine 5 for The Witcher 4, 5, and 6.

“We’ve been using UE5 for The Witcher 4 for almost four years now, and we’re very happy with what we’ve achieved,” Nowakowski said.

“In a way, yes, I do believe that further games should be delivered in a shorter period of time — as we had stated before, our plan still is to launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period, so yes, that would mean we would plan to have a shorter development time between TW4 and TW5, between TW5 and TW6 and so on.”

This is a bold move considering that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came out four years after The Witcher 2.

Based on the timeline suggested by Nowakowski, The Witcher 4 could release as early as 2027, with The Witcher 5 and 6 following in three-year intervals. Currently, 447 people are reported to be working on The Witcher 4, signaling that the project is in full production.

Despite the plan, there are potential challenges. Console transitions could affect release schedules, and the gaming industry itself is going through rapid changes that make long-term predictions difficult. CD Projekt also has other projects underway, including Cyberpunk 2 and a Witcher 1 remake, which could complicate the release of the trilogy.

The approach of using Unreal Engine 5 is central to CD Projekt’s confidence in hitting these deadlines. Nowakowski highlighted the improvements in the engine and how the team is learning to build a massive open world for The Witcher 4.
