Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, and Hunter Schafer Star in A24’s ‘Mother Mary’ — Release Date and Trailer Revealed
David Lowery’s “Mother Mary” is finally getting a release date. After more than two years in production, the film is set to hit theaters in April 2026, according to posters released recently. A trailer was also released showing the first full look at the much-anticipated project.

The film stars Anne Hathaway as Mother Mary and Michaela Coel as Sam, with Hunter Schafer appearing in a supporting role as Hilda. Other notable cast members include Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs. The soundtrack features original music from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs, with composer Daniel Hart handling the score.
“Mother Mary” is described as an epic melodrama that follows the complicated relationship between a pop star and a fashion designer.
Sources indicate that the story centers on Coel’s reclusive costume designer and Hathaway’s disgraced musician. The two former collaborators are forced to work together when Hathaway seeks costumes for a comeback tour. Much of the film reportedly takes place in a single location, a barn, with the characters arguing and only brief performance scenes. Hunter Schafer appears for around ten minutes as Coel’s assistant.
The project was first announced in March 2023, with Lowery writing and directing. Hathaway and Coel were confirmed as leads early on, and by May, Hunter Schafer had joined the cast. FKA Twigs’ involvement was revealed in March 2024. Filming began in Germany in May 2023, and production was allowed to continue through the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Hathaway confirmed that filming wrapped on July 20, 2024.
Based on early reactions, some viewers have called the film “bewildering” and “a movie about nothing.” At the 2024 Melbourne International Film Festival, Lowery himself described it as “a weird, weird film” and seemed as puzzled by the project as anyone.
With its April 2026 release, audiences will finally get to see Lowery’s vision for “Mother Mary.” The combination of Hathaway, Coel, Schafer, and the unique soundtrack makes it one of the most intriguing upcoming films from A24.
