Tarantino “Can’t Stand” This Actor but Calls ‘Midnight in Paris’ a Masterpiece
Quentin Tarantino has admitted he doesn’t like Owen Wilson, even though he appreciates one of his best-known movies. Speaking on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino said, “I really can’t stand Owen Wilson. I mean, I can’t stand him.”
Despite his strong feelings, Tarantino’s opinion softened after watching Midnight in Paris multiple times.
He explained, “The second time I watched the movie, I was like, ‘Ah, okay, don’t be such a p****. He’s not so bad. He’s not so bad.’ And then the third time I watched it, I found myself watching him.”* He added, “I spent the first time watching the movie loving it and hating him.”
Midnight in Paris is a 2011 fantasy comedy written and directed by Woody Allen. The story follows Gil Pender, played by Wilson, a screenwriter who feels stuck in his relationship with his materialistic fiancée, played by Rachel McAdams. Each night, Gil magically travels back to 1920s Paris, where he encounters famous artists and writers and begins to see his life from a new perspective.
The film features a large ensemble cast, including Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Stoll, Alison Pill, Lea Seydoux, Marion Cotillard, and Michael Sheen. It premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival before opening in U.S. theaters in May 2011.
Critics widely praised the film. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay in 2012. The movie also received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Art Direction.
Even though Tarantino has personal issues with Owen Wilson, he clearly respects his performance in the film. His comments show that it’s possible to dislike an actor personally while still enjoying their work on screen.
