Director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead inside their home in Brentwood, California, on Sunday.

According to reports, police treated the case as a homicide investigation. Authorities also said the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was taken into custody in connection with their deaths.

As news of the deaths spread, attention quickly turned to President Donald Trump’s reaction. Instead of offering condolences, Trump posted a message on his Truth Social account that focused on his long-running political feud with Rob Reiner. The post sparked immediate backlash online and across cable news.

In his post, Trump wrote that Reiner suffered from what he called “a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” He added that Reiner had “driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession” with him.

Later, Trump was asked about the post while speaking to reporters at the White House. He did not walk back his comments. Instead, he doubled down on them.

“Well I wasn’t a fan of his at all,” Trump said when asked about the criticism. “He was a deranged person, as far as Trump is concerned.” He went on to claim that Reiner damaged his own career by attacking Trump during the Russia investigation, calling it a hoax.

Trump ended his remarks by saying, “So I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country,” before moving on to another question.

Rob Reiner was known not only for directing famous films but also for being outspoken about politics. In past interviews, including one with MSNBC host Ali Velshi, he warned that the United States was heading toward authoritarian rule under Trump. Those comments were widely circulated at the time, according to media coverage.

Trump’s response to Reiner’s reported death drew strong reactions from public figures. Maria Shriver, a longtime friend of the Reiner family, condemned the president’s words in a series of posts on X.

She wrote that Trump’s behavior showed “no human decency” and called the comments “absolutely disgusting,” according to screenshots shared by news outlets. Shriver said the Reiner family was experiencing unimaginable pain and deserved compassion, not political attacks.

As the investigation continues, the story has become a mix of tragedy and controversy, raising questions about how leaders respond in moments of personal loss, even when political tensions run deep.
