Produced by Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner, The Odyssey features a star-studded ensemble cast including Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Circe, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, and John Leguizamo as Eumaeus. The film also includes Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, and Lupita Nyong’o, alongside several other notable supporting actors.

Christopher Nolan began writing The Odyssey in March 2024 and secured the project with Universal Pictures by October of that year. Matt Damon’s casting as Odysseus was confirmed in February 2025, and filming took place from February to August across international locations including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara.

The film marks Nolan’s first project entirely shot on IMAX 70 mm cameras and has an estimated budget of $250 million, making it the most expensive film of his career.

The story tracks Odysseus as he faces mythical creatures such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe, all while trying to return to his wife, Penelope.

Tom Holland plays his determined son, Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway embodies Penelope, caught between hope and the dangers surrounding her home in Ithaca. Nolan described Odysseus as “an amazing strategist, [and] a very wily person”, highlighting the hero’s cleverness and ingenuity.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 17, 2026, in IMAX, IMAX 70 mm, and other premium large formats. Tickets for select IMAX 70 mm screenings were made available a full year in advance, with many shows selling out within hours.

The Odyssey promises to be a cinematic spectacle, combining action, fantasy, and mythology while staying true to the timeless story of Odysseus.
