Cause of Death Revealed for Rob Reiner and His Wife
Rob Reiner, the acclaimed director who directed The Princess Bride, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, both died from multiple sharp force injuries. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office called it a homicide. They died at home, and the reports say it happened on Sunday, December 14, 2025, right after people last saw them alive on the night of December 13.
Police found their bodies in their house in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on Sunday afternoon. The New York Times said their daughter, Romy, walked into the home and saw her father’s body first. Her roommate, who came with her, dialed 911. When the police got there, they spotted Michele’s body too.
The next day, on Monday, the LAPD put out a note saying their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, caused their deaths. They arrested him around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, and he went into custody by 5 a.m. Monday. Officials mentioned he didn’t fight back during the arrest.
By Tuesday, Nick got hit with two charges of first-degree murder, plus extra stuff about killing more than one person and using a knife as a weapon. If a jury finds him guilty, he could get life in prison with no parole or even the death penalty. He showed up in court Wednesday morning and just said yes to skipping a quick arraignment.
His lawyers didn’t say if he’s guilty or not, and the judge decided to keep him locked up without bail until January 7, 2026, when the arraignment happens.
Romy and her brother Jake put out a message on Wednesday about losing their parents. Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day, they told PEOPLE. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. They added, We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.
Tracy Reiner, Rob’s oldest daughter from his earlier marriage to Penny Marshall, who he adopted, talked about it before. I came from the greatest family ever, she said to NBC News. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.
Some of Rob and Michele’s close friends and work friends shared a group message on Tuesday to remember them. They were a special force together, dynamic, unselfish and inspiring, it said. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.
The people who signed it include Billy Crystal from When Harry Met Sally and his wife Janice; Albert Brooks and his wife Kimberly, who Rob made a documentary about in 2023 called Albert Brooks: Defending My Life; Martin Short from A Spinal Tap Reunion; Alan Zweibel who wrote North and his wife Robin; Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm and his wife Ashley Underwood; Marc Shaiman who did music for When Harry Met Sally and his husband Lou Mirabal; Barry Levinson the filmmaker and his wife Diana; and James Costos the ambassador with his partner Michael Smith.
