James Van Der Beek Opens Up About Shocking Weight Loss Ahead at ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Reunion
James Van Der Beek opened up about his recent weight loss and missing the “Dawson’s Creek” reunion in a heartfelt interview on “Today.”
The actor, who was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer last year, explained that his absence from the event in September was due to a stomach virus, not his cancer treatment.
Van Der Beek said he watched the reunion via Zoom and was moved by the way fans greeted his family. “As crushed as I was not being able to go to that ‘Dawson’s Creek’ reunion, my family got to go. And I was Zooming in on that night and they got a standing ovation just for taking their seats.”
“And all that love that would have otherwise been directed at me, was directed at my family. It was just one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever gotten to witness. I’m just so grateful to the fans for doing that,” he said.
He also addressed the dramatic weight loss viewers noticed during his Zoom appearance. “I’d lost so much weight because of the stomach virus, yeah. No, it was not cancer related. Although with cancer everything’s like, ‘Why don’t we super-size that stomach virus?’” Van Der Beek reassured fans that he is feeling much better than he did a few months ago.
The “Dawson’s Creek” reunion brought together the original cast for the first time since the show ended in 2003. The event included a table read of the pilot episode and raised funds for F Cancer and Van Der Beek’s own treatment. Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to read Van Der Beek’s lines, while Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and others were also in attendance.
Van Der Beek’s reflections highlight the emotional impact of the reunion and the unwavering support of the show’s fans. Despite missing the in-person event, he was able to share in the celebration through his family and online.
This interview shows how resilient Van Der Beek has been while facing health challenges. It’s inspiring to see him focus on the positive and cherish the love from fans and family.
