James Ransone, best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka on the acclaimed TV series “The Wire,” has died at the age of 46.

According to TMZ, the Los Angeles Medical Examiner confirmed that Ransone died by suicide through hanging. The Los Angeles Police Department also investigated the scene and found no signs of foul play.

Ransone began his acting career in the early 2000s with small roles on shows like “Ed” and “Third Watch.” He rose to prominence with “The Wire,” appearing in all 12 episodes of the show’s second season. His portrayal of Ziggy, a troubled dock worker involved in crime, earned critical praise and made him a fan favorite.

Beyond “The Wire,” Ransone appeared in several popular TV series including “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “Burn Notice.” His film credits include “Tangerine,” “It: Chapter Two,” and “The Black Phone” films, with the sequel releasing earlier this year.

Ransone faced personal challenges in his life. In May 2021, he publicly shared on Instagram that he had been s**** abused by his math tutor in 1992. He reported the abuse to the Baltimore County police in 2020, but the case was not pursued further. By age 27, Ransone had struggled with a heroin addiction and significant debt, though he became sober in 2007. He was married to Jamie McPhee and had one son.

Ransone’s work has left a lasting impression on both television and film audiences.
