Anthony Joshua Injured in Tragic Car Accident That Claimed Two Lives
Boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria on Monday, leaving two people dead and the former heavyweight champion with minor injuries, according to local authorities and eyewitness reports.
The crash occurred at around 11 a.m. local time on a busy stretch of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. He was one of four passengers in the car, while his security team followed in a separate vehicle.
Traffic officials told the BBC that the Lexus appeared to be speeding and lost control during an overtaking maneuver. Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed Joshua was among five people involved in the accident and said two people died.
“The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the Corps said.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed added, “On behalf of the entire management and staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps, we extend heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured victim, Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery.”

The speed limit on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is 50 mph. Eyewitnesses described the scene to Punch newspaper, saying Joshua was seated behind the driver with three other passengers in the SUV. His security detail followed in a Pajero SUV.
One witness said, “Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived.”
Footage from the scene showed Joshua appearing dazed and in pain, while the bodies of the two victims were visible nearby.
Joshua, 36, recently returned to Nigeria, where he has family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State. He attended school in Ikenne, about 53 miles from the crash site, before moving back to the UK at age 12. A family member told the BBC, “We are hoping for his speedy recovery and also the people who passed away – I pray for the departed to rest in peace.”
