Avengers: Doomsday is set to be the fifth Avengers movie and the 39th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. The story will bring together the Avengers, Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, and the X-Men to face the new villain, Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.
The movie features an impressive ensemble cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.
The project has a long history. After announcing The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars in July 2022 as part of the conclusion of Phase Six of the MCU, Marvel went through several changes.
Destin Daniel Cretton was initially set to direct The Kang Dynasty, with Jonathan Majors reprising his role as Kang the Conqueror, and Jeff Loveness joined as a writer. Later, Cretton left, Waldron replaced Loveness, and Marvel moved away from the Kang storyline due to legal issues involving Majors, who was eventually fired.
In July 2024, Marvel confirmed that the Russo brothers would return to direct, McFeely would co-write, and Downey would play Doctor Doom. Filming began in April at Pinewood Studios in England and included locations in Bahrain. Production wrapped in September with most of the cast reprising roles from previous MCU films and the X-Men franchise.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026, with its sequel, Secret Wars, planned for December 17, 2027.
