Simu Liu Says Robert Downey Jr. Had His Own ‘Downey Land’ Trailer Village on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Set With Person Chefs
Simu Liu is giving fans a fun look behind the scenes of Avengers: Doomsday, and it all centers on Robert Downey Jr.’s larger-than-life presence on set.
In a recent interview with Collider, Liu shared that Downey had an entire section of trailers during filming that cast and crew jokingly called “Downey Land.”
Liu, who returns as Shang-Chi in the upcoming Marvel film, said the setup was impossible to miss and quickly became a talking point among everyone working on the movie.
According to Liu, Downey’s space wasn’t just big, it was its own world. He explained that Downey had several trailers grouped together and a private area at base camp filled with eye-catching artwork inspired by Andy Warhol, except all the images were of Downey himself. Liu said Downey was very aware of how over-the-top it all was.
Liu recalled being invited into Downey Land for the first time and thinking it was a normal visit, until lunch came up. He said he had brought his own food from set, but Downey quickly stopped him. “Oh, no, no, no. We don’t do that here,” Downey told him, according to Liu. Moments later, chefs appeared and set up a full buffet just for the area.
Liu said the experience felt unreal, especially as other big-name actors walked through while he was eating. He admitted he had to stop himself from acting like a fan and remind himself that he was there to work.
In the same interview, Liu said he had to mentally shut down his excitement to stay focused. “I have a job to do,” he explained, adding that he kept telling himself to treat everyone as equals, even though he felt starstruck inside.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to feature a massive cast, including longtime Marvel stars and returning X-Men actors, along with several newer faces. Downey’s role as Doctor Doom marks his return to the MCU in a very different way, after years of playing Iron Man.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18.
