Directed by Paul Feig and written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, The Housemaid is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name. The story follows Sweeney’s character, a young woman with a troubled past, who becomes the live-in housekeeper for a wealthy family played by Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. What starts as a seemingly perfect household quickly unravels when she discovers the family is hiding dark secrets.
The film premiered at the Axa Equitable Center in New York City on December 2, before opening in U.S. theaters on December 19. Critics have praised the movie for its plot twists, suspense, and the performances of the cast, especially Amanda Seyfried.

In North America, The Housemaid opened alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, and David. It was projected to earn $20–25 million from 3,015 theaters. The film made $8 million on its first day, including $2.3 million from Thursday night previews, and debuted at $19 million, finishing third behind Fire and Ash and David.
The strong box office numbers show that audiences are responding well to The Housemaid. Lionsgate says the film’s global success proves that thrillers with strong casts can still perform big.
