‘Ignorant Suits Her’: Megyn Kelly Fires at Ellen DeGeneres’ Controversial Statement
The political and cultural divide in the United States continues to manifest through celebrity feuds, with the latest clash occurring between conservative commentator Megyn Kelly and former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
On a recent broadcast, Kelly unleashed a blistering critique of DeGeneres following the comedian’s comments on a controversial shooting in Minnesota. The conflict centers on the death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman who was killed by federal immigration officers earlier this month.
During the Monday, January 19, episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, the host took aim at DeGeneres for inserting herself into the national discourse from abroad. “Ellen DeGeneres felt the need to weigh in, and I know you, like I have been asking yourself, ‘What would Ellen think of all this?'” Kelly sarcastically asked her listeners. She wasted no time pointing out that DeGeneres is no longer a resident of the country she is critiquing.
“She’s abandoned the United States to go live in the U.K.,” Kelly noted, referring to DeGeneres’ recent relocation to the English countryside. Kelly then pivoted to attack DeGeneres’ character, bringing up the allegations of a toxic workplace that plagued the end of her daytime talk show. Kelly claimed that the show’s cancellation in 2022 was a direct result of DeGeneres’ behavior behind the scenes.
“She bullied people who were less powerful than she was,” Kelly alleged on air. She went on to share a specific anecdote passed on to her by an acquaintance with ties to the production. “She had a rule, I’m very reliably informed, that someone I knew had a sister who worked for her. You were not allowed to look her in the eye as one of her producers when you walked past her,” the journalist claimed.
Kelly used these character attacks to dismiss DeGeneres’ sympathy for the protesters in Minneapolis. “And so it’s no surprise that Ellen DeGeneres is totally fine with what these so-called protesters [and] terrorist[s] in the streets of Minneapolis,” Kelly said. She argued that the comedian’s stance was not just uninformed, but intentionally misleading.
Kelly called the Finding Nemo actress “ignorant” for believing what she described as “lies fed from CNN.” The host doubled down on her assessment of DeGeneres’ motives. “It’s not blind ignorance, it’s willful ignorance. It suits her ideological purposes,” Kelly continued. “Shame on her. Enjoy England.”
The commentary was a reaction to a statement DeGeneres issued on Sunday, January 18. The comedian expressed her grief regarding the death of Renee Good, who was shot in the head by an ICE officer while protesting from her car on January 7. “I’m so sad, and so angry, and so worried,” DeGeneres wrote on social media.
DeGeneres also reposted a statement from the victim’s wife, Becca Good, amplifying the call for justice. The shooting has become a flashpoint for debate, with supporters of the officers claiming self-defense and critics arguing it was an unjustified use of lethal force. However, DeGeneres’ attempt to show solidarity was met with immediate backlash from critics who pointed out her silence on other tragedies.
Social media users flooded her comments to ask why she had not spoken out regarding the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk the previous autumn. “You should be sad for yourself since your posts and support are selective,” one person wrote. Others accused her of hypocrisy for mourning one figure while ignoring another.
“Did Charlie Kirk’s assassination make you sad and angry too?” another user asked. The sentiment was echoed by a third commenter who demanded equal empathy. “Can you honor Charlie Kirk this way too though? Never heard any announcement. We should honor everyone not just select who you decide to honor,” they added. “We are all humans here and have families, not just the ones you select.”
Ellen DeGeneres was once the queen of daytime television, hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show for nineteen seasons from 2003 to 2022. The show won dozens of Daytime Emmy Awards and was known for its celebrity interviews, pranks, and games. However, the program’s reputation imploded following a 2020 investigation by BuzzFeed News that detailed allegations of racism, s**** misconduct, and intimidation by executive producers.
Since the show’s conclusion, DeGeneres has largely retreated from the public eye. She embarked on a stand-up comedy tour titled Ellen’s Last Stand… Up, which was released as a Netflix special. In the special, she addressed being “kicked out of show business” for being “mean.” She and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, subsequently sold their properties in California and moved to the Cotswolds in England.
Megyn Kelly has re-established herself as a dominant voice in independent media following her departures from Fox News and NBC. Her podcast and radio show on SiriusXM, The Megyn Kelly Show, regularly ranks among the top news programs in the country. She is known for her combative interview style and her willingness to challenge mainstream narratives regarding culture and politics.
Kelly often uses her platform to critique Hollywood elitism, making DeGeneres a frequent target of her commentary. The divide between the two figures highlights the broader polarization in American media consumption. As the investigation into the Minneapolis shooting continues, it is likely that high-profile commentators will continue to use the tragedy to debate broader societal issues.
Please tell us in the comments if you believe celebrities who leave the country should still attempt to influence American politics or if they should keep their opinions to themselves.
