‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ Trailer Shows Sith Survivor Striking Back – Release Date Revealed
Darth Maul is the kind of character who simply refuses to go away. Even though Obi-Wan Kenobi sliced him in half a long time ago in The Phantom Menace, Maul used his own hatred to stay alive.
He eventually showed up again in the animated shows and even had a quick cameo as a crime boss in the movie Solo. Now, a brand new trailer has finally been released for an animated series titled Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
This new project was first teased behind closed doors during Star Wars Celebration Japan back in April 2025, but now the rest of the world is getting a look at it. The story takes place about one year after the end of the Clone Wars.
This is a very specific time in the timeline because the Empire is just starting to take over the galaxy. The show aims to explain how Maul went from a defeated warrior to the powerful underworld leader we see later on.

Dave Filoni created the show for Disney Plus, and it focuses on Maul trying to build a criminal empire on a planet that the Galactic Empire hasn’t reached yet. While he is doing this, he finds a new student to train.
The official synopsis says the story is a pulpy adventure that finds Maul plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who may just be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.
Sam Witwer is coming back to provide the voice for Maul, which is great news for fans who love his intense performance. The cast also includes Gideon Adlon as a character named Devon Izara and Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson. Richard Ayoade will voice a character called Two-Boots. Some of these characters are even getting their own prequel comic book series from Marvel starting this March.
The creative team behind the show includes head writer Matt Michnovetz and director Brad Rau, with Lucasfilm Animation handling the actual production. Fans won’t have to wait very long to see the finished product.
The show is scheduled to start on April 6. Disney Plus will release two episodes every week until the big finale lands on May 4, which is the date fans celebrate as Star Wars Day.
