Jameela Jamil is speaking out to clarify her stance on feminism following the release of private messages that cast her in a negative light. The controversy began when court documents from Blake Lively’s ongoing lawsuit against Justin Baldoni were unsealed.

Among the papers was a text from August 2024 where Jamil criticized Lively. In the messages to a publicist, Jamil compared Lively to a “suicide bomber” and described her behavior as a “bizarre villain act.” These comments were made while people were discussing Lively’s behavior during a movie press tour.

After news outlets suggested these texts hurt Jamil’s reputation as a feminist, she posted a video on Instagram to defend herself. She argued that feminism is about equal rights, not about liking every woman you meet. Jamil explained that having personal conflicts or criticizing another woman does not disqualify someone from being a feminist.

“Guys, feminism means fighting for the political, social and economic equity for women,” Jamil said in her video. “It does not mean you have to like every single woman. It doesn’t mean you have to be friends with every single woman. It means you can actually beef with other women.” She told her followers that as long as a person supports a woman’s right to have the same opportunities as men, they are still following feminist goals.

She further emphasized that the movement is a political stance rather than a social club. “That’s all feminism is. It’s a moral and political stance. It is not a sleepover where we braid each other’s p*b*s, OK?” she said. She insisted that not getting along with everyone is simply part of being human.

Jamil has recently been seen in the Netflix movie People We Meet on Vacation and is known for her roles in The Good Place and She-Hulk. She also provided a voice for the Pixar film Elio, which was nominated for an Oscar for best animated feature on January 22. Blake Lively’s legal case, which includes allegations of s**** harassment and retaliation against Baldoni, is currently moving toward a trial scheduled for May 2026.

Jameela Jamil makes a fair point that you don’t have to be best friends with someone just because you share a gender or a political goal. However, using extreme language like “suicide bomber” in private texts is always going to look bad when it becomes public, regardless of your intent.
