Anthony Hopkins Draws Heat for Blunt ‘Get Over It’ Comment About His Daughter
Anthony Hopkins is opening up about one of the most painful parts of his life in his new memoir, We Did OK, Kid. In the book, the 87-year-old actor reflects on his long and difficult estrangement from his only daughter, Abigail Hopkins. The details come directly from his memoir and recent interviews tied to the book’s release.
Hopkins writes about leaving his first wife, Petronella Barker, when their daughter was still a baby. At the time, he was struggling with alcohol and says the marriage was filled with tension from the start.
He explains that things reached a breaking point after returning home from filming in Scotland. “I had never been physically violent, but in that moment, I was filled with such revulsion that I became afraid for both myself and her,” he writes about the final argument.
Before leaving, Hopkins says he quietly went to Abigail’s room. “I looked down at her and whispered goodbye. Then I walked back to the hall, picked up my suitcases, and left the house,” he recalls. He admits that his decision created a distance that never fully healed.
In the memoir, Hopkins says he understands why his daughter never forgave him. “Abigail never seemed able to forgive me for leaving the family when she was a baby. She had her reasons. I can’t blame her for that,” he writes. At the same time, he maintains that staying in the home would have caused more harm.
The actor also addresses comments he made in a 2018 interview that many people felt sounded cold, especially when he spoke about not knowing his grandchildren. He explains that his tone came from emotional habits learned in childhood, though he admits he regrets how it came across.
Hopkins has now been sober for nearly fifty years and has been married to Stella Hopkins since 2003. He says he carries no anger toward his daughter. “I hope my daughter knows that my door is always open to her. I want her to be well and happy,” he writes.
However, recent remarks made while promoting the book sparked backlash. Hopkins said, “You have to say get over it. Now, if you can’t get over it, fine. Good luck to you.” He added, “But I have no judgment. I did what I could. So that’s it.” When asked if he hopes his daughter reads the memoir, he replied, “I’m not going to answer that. No, I don’t care… I don’t want to hurt her.”
Despite the controversy, Hopkins remains busy. His memoir is topping bestseller lists, and he continues to act in major projects. He recently appeared in One Life and starred in the Peacock series Those About to Die. He has also gained a new wave of fans through social media, where he often shares piano videos and lighthearted moments.
Anthony Hopkins’ memoir presents a raw look at a life filled with success and regret. It shows a man willing to admit his failures while standing by the choices he made.
