This production marks a significant evolution in the professional relationship between Scott and the acclaimed director. The two previously joined forces for the 2020 science fiction thriller Tenet, for which Scott recorded the lead track titled The Plan.
Nolan expressed high regard for the artist’s contributions during a 2020 profile with GQ, stating that his voice became the final piece of a yearlong puzzle. The director further noted that Scott’s insights into the musical and narrative mechanism Ludwig Göransson and I were building were immediate, insightful and profound.
The Odyssey is already positioned as a monumental cinematic event, not only for its casting but for its technical ambition. Matt Damon leads the production as the titular Greek hero Odysseus, supported by an expansive ensemble including Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, and Elliot Page.
Beyond the star power, the film represents a historic milestone in cinematography as the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX cameras. This achievement was made possible by the development of a specialized film casing known as a blimp, which suppresses the notoriously loud mechanical noise of IMAX hardware.
This innovation allows the production to capture quiet, character-driven moments that were previously hindered by the equipment’s volume.
Nolan detailed the importance of this technological leap in a conversation with Empire Magazine, explaining that the blimp system is a game-changer. He elaborated on the creative freedom the tool provides, remarking that you can be shooting a foot from an actor’s face while they’re whispering and get usable sound. What that opens up are intimate moments of performance on the world’s most beautiful format.
