Ryan Reynolds may be ready to put the red suit back on sooner than expected. After months of mixed signals about the future of Deadpool, new information suggests the actor is once again actively working on the next chapter for the character.

The update comes from Puck News, which reports that Reynolds is currently focused on developing a new Deadpool movie. This comes after earlier reports claimed Marvel Studios was not in a rush to move forward with Deadpool 4 following the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine. While Marvel has been busy planning major Phase Six projects, Reynolds appears to be taking matters into his own hands creatively.

Fans noticed that Reynolds was missing from early casting news for Avengers: Doomsday, the big Marvel event film scheduled for December. That absence sparked talk that Deadpool might sit out the next wave of MCU stories. Still, industry rumors continue to float around, including talk of a possible appearance involving a version of Reed Richards played by Robert Downey Jr., though Marvel has confirmed nothing.

Reynolds himself hinted back in late 2024 that he was already thinking ahead, even if his ideas weren’t straightforward. I have some pitches and ideas, but none of them center on Deadpool, he said at the time. He explained that Wade Wilson works better when he’s not always the main focus. He is a great supporting or ensemble player. And I would always want Deadpool and Wolverine to be paired in some way.

He also made it clear that he wants to avoid repeating himself. Centering Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant, Reynolds said. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool, which is fulfilling and powerful.

More recently, insider Daniel Richtman added new detail by saying the project in development is not a traditional solo sequel. According to him, the next Deadpool movie is being shaped as a team-up story. That fits with long-running rumors about Deadpool joining forces with members of the X-Men or finally bringing Reynolds’ long-discussed X-Force idea to life.

Outside of Marvel, Reynolds remains busy. He is set to star in the survival comedy Mayday for Apple, alongside Kenneth Branagh, with a release expected in late 2026. He also voices a role in the animated movie Animal Friends, which is scheduled to hit theaters in May. Through his production company Maximum Effort, he is also working on the Netflix thriller Eloise.

Reynolds’ last appearance as Deadpool was a major milestone. Deadpool & Wolverine, directed by Shawn Levy, earned around $1.3 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. That success made it clear the character still has huge pull with audiences.

For now, Marvel has not officially announced Deadpool 4. But with Reynolds clearly involved behind the scenes, it looks like Wade Wilson is far from done causing chaos in the MCU.
