Matt Damon has had his fair share of legendary directors, but working with Clint Eastwood provided a unique masterclass in efficiency. While appearing on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, the Oscar winner reminisced about his time on the set of the 2009 sports drama Invictus. Damon portrayed Francois Pienaar, a South African rugby player, a role that required him to master a notoriously difficult accent.

To prepare, Damon spent six months working with elite dialogue coach Tim Monich, practicing from nine to five every single day. South Africans speak English, but it’s like their tongue does the exact opposite thing that ours does, Damon explained to O’Brien. He went into the first day of filming eager to show off the various ways he could deliver his lines.

However, Eastwood’s legendary “one-take” reputation proved true immediately after the very first shot. After the director called for the crew to move on, a confused Damon asked if they could try one more version of the scene. Why? You wanna waste everybody’s time? Eastwood replied, leaving Damon with no choice but to follow the lead of the man he considered a hero.

The actor noted that while the process was incredibly fast, he eventually understood that Eastwood’s style was rooted in a deep respect for the crew’s time and energy. There was a kindness to the words, Damon recalled, describing the director as a truly lovely person. Interestingly, this approach changed when they reunited for the 2010 film Hereafter, where Damon witnessed Eastwood spend forty takes on a scene involving a young non-actor.

As of early 2026, Matt Damon is enjoying a massive wave of success following the January 16 release of his latest film, The Rip, on Netflix. The crime thriller, directed by Joe Carnahan, stars Damon and his longtime creative partner Ben Affleck as Miami narcotics officers caught in a web of corruption after discovering $20 million in a stash house. The film also features Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and Kyle Chandler, and it has already climbed to the top of the streaming charts.

Looking further into 2026, Damon is set to lead one of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Scheduled for release on July 17, the film is a sweeping IMAX-scale adaptation of the ancient Greek epic, with Damon starring as the legendary warrior Odysseus. He is joined by an elite ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Zendaya as the goddess Athena.

Do you think Clint Eastwood’s “one-take” philosophy produces more authentic performances, or do you prefer the perfectionism of a director like Christopher Nolan, who might spend days on a single sequence? Share your thoughts in the comments.
