Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 72nd birthday in impressive fashion, showing off her deadlifting skills at the gym. The media icon shared a video on Instagram on Thursday, January 29, giving fans a glimpse of her fitness routine as she powered through reps with a weighted barbell.

Dressed in navy leggings, a long-sleeved blue top, and white sneakers, Winfrey displayed her leaner frame and athletic strength. Her hair was held back with a thick headband as she focused on her trap-bar deadlifts. After finishing a set, she joked to the person filming, I didn’t know what a deadlift was.

The TV personality explained she learned about the exercise from a famous friend. I remember Adele told me she was deadlifting and I pretended to know what she was talking about, she said with a laugh. She even included a throwback clip from her 2021 One Night Only interview with Adele, showing the singer lifting 160 to 170 pounds. Winfrey said she was amazed at the feat.

In her post caption, Winfrey reflected on her commitment to strength training. Life at 72 is looking different than every other decade. Two summers and two new knees ago, I decided to add strength training to my workouts because we all need to maintain muscle as we get older, she wrote.

She also credited her progress to consistency, noting she underwent double knee surgery in 2021. I can’t say I’m ready for the Olympics like Adele but I sure feel stronger, she added. Winfrey finished with a challenge to her followers: So in honor of another trip around the sun for me, go try something new. You never know where it will lead you.

Winfrey is also involved in other projects. She will appear in the HBO special adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me, blending documentary and dramatic readings.

Her company, Harpo Productions, is developing a screen version of Abraham Verghese’s bestselling novel The Covenant of Water. She also recently hosted AI and the Future of Us, a primetime special discussing artificial intelligence with guests like Bill Gates and Sam Altman.

In addition to her media work, Winfrey continues to succeed as an author, releasing Enough with Dr. Ania Jastreboff. She has consistently used her platform to encourage health, strength, and wellness, particularly around aging and weight management. At 72, she shows no signs of slowing down, inspiring fans with both her professional achievements and personal fitness journey.
