Margot Robbie Reveals the One Scene She Wishes She Never Filmed
Margot Robbie has long been a staple of the awards season conversation, earning critical acclaim for her transformative performances in films like the 2017 biopic I, Tonya and the 2019 drama Bombshell.
While she has more recently dominated global culture as both the star and producer of the billion-dollar phenomenon Barbie, her path to superstardom involved some grueling days on set. In particular, her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street included one specific scene that she would likely never care to film again.
In the high-octane 2013 biography, Robbie played Naomi Lapaglia, the wife of wealthy stockbroker Jordan Belfort. One memorable moment required Robbie and her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio to share an intimate scene while covered in piles of cash. While the imagery was meant to signify the ultimate peak of wealth and excess, the reality for the actress was far from a luxury experience.
Robbie eventually revealed that using movie prop money as a mattress was a painful mistake. She shared in a 2017 interview with The Daily Beast that she ended up with a million paper cuts on her back from the encounter. She noted that the experience was not as glamorous as it sounds, as the counterfeit bills were surprisingly sharp and abrasive compared to real currency.
The texture of the fake cash was so harsh that the film crew was visibly alarmed when the actress finally stood up. Robbie recalled that when she reached for her robe, the staff gasped because she looked like you’ve been whipped a million times. Her back was apparently covered in a thousand red scratches caused by the stiff paper edges of the prop money.
Working with a legendary director like Scorsese was surely a career high, but Robbie made it clear that some “glamorous” movie tropes are best left on the screen. She even offered a bit of practical advice for anyone feeling inspired by the scene, simply stating that if anyone is ever planning on having s*x on top of a pile of cash, don’t.
Today, the 35-year-old actress is in the middle of a massive global press tour for her latest project, an atmospheric adaptation of Wuthering Heights. In this new version directed by Emerald Fennell, Robbie stars as Catherine Earnshaw alongside Jacob Elordi’s Heathcliff. The film, which features original music by Charli XCX, is scheduled to hit theaters on February 13, just in time for the Valentine’s Day weekend.
Outside of the Yorkshire moors, Robbie has been busy promoting the sci-fi romance A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which features an ensemble cast including Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith.
She also recently celebrated the birth of her first child in late 2024, balancing her role as a new mother with her duties as a powerhouse producer at LuckyChap Entertainment. With projects like the Sims movie and a potential Ocean’s Eleven prequel in development, she remains one of the most influential figures in Hollywood.
