Chris Hemsworth has spent years playing heroes on screen, but lately he has been facing something far more personal. In a new interview with The Guardian, the actor spoke openly about the fear and doubt he felt before sharing a major health detail with the public.

Hemsworth explained that he seriously questioned whether being honest about his genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease could change how people see him. He worried it might affect his image as an action star and even his future roles. The thought of being that open did not come easily.

I wondered if I was letting people too far in, he said. Are they no longer going to believe in the action star or the Marvel character? And do I want people to know my fears and insecurities to this level?

The health information became public in 2022 through the Disney+ series Limitless. During the show, doctors told Hemsworth that he carries two copies of the APOE4 gene. This gene increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by eight to ten times. It is not a diagnosis, but it was still a shock.

The issue is deeply personal for him. Alzheimer’s already runs in his family. His grandfather had the disease, and Hemsworth confirmed last year that his father is now living with it as well. Seeing his father struggle has changed how he thinks about time, work, and family.

My appetite for racing forward has really been reined in, Hemsworth told The Guardian. I’ve become more aware of the fragility of things. You start thinking, ‘My dad won’t be here for ever.’

That shift has affected how he views his children too. They are now 11 and 13, and he feels how fast those years are passing. Small moments at home matter more to him than they once did.

His career choices have changed along with his mindset. When he was younger, Hemsworth said he often took roles mainly for financial reasons. He felt responsible for helping his wider family and struggled to turn down big offers, even if the projects were not creatively exciting.

I’d think, ‘I came from nothing. Who am I to turn down that kind of money?’ he admitted, adding that some jobs were not the purest creative decision.

In 2025, he released a documentary called A Road Trip to Remember, which focused on his father’s illness. He described it as a love letter meant to help spark memories and create lasting moments together.

Hemsworth has also pushed back against the idea that his genetic risk means his career is ending. He has been clear that it is not a medical verdict. It’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation, he previously said, noting that the gene only signals risk, not certainty.

He also criticized how some headlines made it seem like he was retiring. It really kind of pissed me off because it felt like I had been vulnerable with something personal and shared this, he said in 2024.

Professionally, Hemsworth is still very active. He stars in the heist thriller Crime 101, which arrives in theaters on February 13. Directed by Bart Layton and based on a Don Winslow story, the film also features Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan.

Later in the year, he returns as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, set for release on December 18. Even with these big projects, his focus is clearly shifting toward balance, meaning, and family.
