Whoopi Goldberg is famously comfortable in her own skin, and that includes her choice to stay single. The legendary actress, who is now 70 years old, has long made it clear that marriage just isn’t for her. In a fresh and unfiltered conversation with playwright Jeremy O.

Harris for Interview magazine, the EGOT winner doubled down on her preference for solo living. When Harris asked about her choice to remain unattached, Goldberg was blunt, stating she really doesn’t care about the expectations of others, especially when it comes to what they might want from a partner.

Goldberg explained that there is a massive difference between the feeling of being lonely and the simple state of being alone. She believes that society often pushes the idea that being “singular” is a problem or that something must be wrong with you if you aren’t part of a pair.

For Goldberg, the freedom to just be herself is worth more than any traditional relationship. She joked about the small annoyances of sharing a life, like having to compromise on whether to have red or white wine with dinner, adding that sometimes she just wants to go out and have some pasta without having to check in with anyone else.

This isn’t a new stance for the Ghost star, who has been married three times in the past. She famously described herself as a round peg trying to fit into the square hole of marriage.

Goldberg finds that she is much happier on her own because she can spend time with people on her own terms without the pressure of living together forever. She has often said that she simply doesn’t want another person in her house, a sentiment she has held onto for years.

In the Interview feature, she also noted that she isn’t particularly “good” at relationships because they require focusing on someone else’s needs. Between her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she feels her plate is already full. She is much more interested in enriching those family bonds and focusing on her busy career than trying to navigate the complexities of a romantic partnership.

As of early February, Goldberg continues to be a staple of daytime television as a co-host on The View. Beyond her talk show duties, she is enjoying a significant acting resurgence. Fans can look forward to seeing her in the Amazon Prime Video miniseries Anansi Boys, based on the Neil Gaiman novel, where she plays the formidable Bird Woman.

She also recently spent time in Italy filming a guest arc for the long-running soap opera Un Posto al Sole, a role she took on simply because she wanted to try something new. In addition to these roles, there is significant buzz surrounding a science fiction thriller titled Phoenix, which is rumored to be in pre-production for a release later this year.

Rumors suggest Goldberg will play a grizzled lunar colony veteran, a role that would highlight her ability to jump between genres. Between her activism, her daily talk show, and her international acting gigs, Goldberg is proving that being “singular” doesn’t mean slowing down.
