Kaley Cuoco has a new reason to love her passport. The actress recently opened up about a major career move that required her to step far outside her comfort zone. For her latest project, the MGM+ thriller miniseries Vanished, Cuoco had to decide whether she was ready to leave her home in Los Angeles for a solo filming adventure in France.

While the script was exactly the kind of television she loves, the thought of being away from her family made the decision a difficult one. The 40-year-old star shared that she was initially very hesitant because her daughter, Matilda, had just turned two.

She found herself questioning if it was right to leave her toddler behind for several weeks. However, her fiancé, actor Tom Pelphrey, became her biggest cheerleader. He encouraged her to take the role, telling her that the experience would be amazing. With his full support, Cuoco decided to embrace the opportunity as a personal adventure and a reminder of why she enjoys her craft.

Before heading overseas, Cuoco even considered whether the production could be moved closer to home. She quickly realized that Marseille was more than just a setting; it was a huge character in the show.

The authentic French scenery added an international intrigue to the story that couldn’t be faked on a backlot. Ultimately, she chose to go alone after realizing the mountainous terrain and busy streets of Marseille were not a place for a two-year-old.

Trusting her gut paid off, as she was able to fully immerse herself in the production, knowing things were handled at home. To keep a bit of familiarity with her, she brought along her beloved Chihuahua, Opal.

The dog became a local hit with the French crew, who affectionately renamed her Opolette. Cuoco described the experience as feeling like a vacation with friends, where she occasionally had to go to work a little bit.

As of February, Vanished has officially premiered, featuring Cuoco as an archaeologist named Alice searching for her missing boyfriend. The four-part series stars Sam Claflin as her partner, Tom, alongside a talented international cast including Matthias Schweighöfer and Karin Viard. The show has been praised for its twisty, “whodunnit” energy, which aligns perfectly with Cuoco’s self-proclaimed obsession with true crime stories.

Beyond her trip to France, Cuoco has been staying busy on multiple fronts. She recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote the series and was seen at the Critics’ Choice Awards supporting Pelphrey, who was nominated for his work in the HBO hit Task. Rumors are also swirling that she may return to her iconic role as Penny in a new Big Bang Theory spinoff titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which is currently in development.
