Harrison Ford Opens up About His Most Beloved Film Quote
Harrison Ford has always approached acting like a trade, much like the carpentry work he did before finding fame. He views a movie set as a place for “dirty work,” where success is found by grinding through takes until a scene feels right. This blue-collar mindset is most obvious in his portrayal of Indiana Jones, a character who is far from a typical, polished hero.
While Indiana Jones is an iconic action figure, he was originally designed by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg to be more of a curious scholar than a soldier. He is driven by a deep fascination with archaeology rather than a desire for power or spiritual glory.
Even in the opening minutes of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jones makes it clear he doesn’t care about the supernatural legends of the Ark; he just wants to preserve a piece of history.
During his many adventures, Indy often ends up battered and bruised, which led to one of Ford’s favorite lines in the entire series. In the first film, when Marion Ravenwood tries to help him clean up his wounds, he famously quips that it’s not the years that have worn him down, but the mileage.
This sentiment has defined the character for over forty years, showing a man who is constantly pushed to his physical limits. Despite the wear and tear, Ford has continued to return to the role, even as the character has aged on screen.
The “mileage” of the character was explored further in The Last Crusade, which showed a young Indy played by River Phoenix, proving that the daring spirit was there from the start. Most recently, Ford put the fedora back on for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, showing that the character’s fire for discovery is impossible to extinguish.
As of February, Harrison Ford is staying incredibly active in both television and film. He is currently starring in the third season of the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking, which premiered on January 28. In the series, he plays Dr. Paul Rhodes, a therapist living with Parkinson’s disease, and he recently shared the screen with Michael J. Fox in what he called a very special and fulfilling experience.
Ford also made his official debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. He starred in Captain America: Brave New World, where his character famously transforms into the Red Hulk.
Do you think Harrison Ford should finally hang up the fedora for good after his recent run of projects, or do you want to see him take on even more roles in the Marvel universe? Share your thoughts in the comments.
