Before Pedro Pascal was the face of the Star Wars and Marvel universes, he was just a struggling actor in New York with a bank account in the single digits and a rescue dog who kept him grounded.

While the world knows him for protecting Grogu or leading the survivors in The Last of Us, his most significant real-life role was as a caretaker to a pit-bull mix named Gretta. Now, Pascal has a new dog, and he keeps entertaining fans with occasional photos of his dog, Mr. Mingo.

Pascal’s love for animals is a defining trait that fans have championed as one of his many “green flags.” He has famously advocated for rescue pets and pit bulls, a breed often misunderstood, by sharing his own experiences of Gretta’s gentle and protective nature.

“I think about how poor I was when I had Gretta,” he remarked when discussing the early days of his career. “I think about the bougie life she would be leading with me now as opposed to then and I grieve, I really do.”

The actor’s animal-loving reputation even extends to his professional life, where he is known to be easily distracted by any dog on a film set. During a photoshoot for Esquire, the owner of a wire-haired dachshund named Olive revealed that Pascal was so taken with the pup that he struggled to focus on the camera.

When he isn’t busy being a champion for shelter animals, Pascal is currently managing one of the most packed schedules in Hollywood history. He is set to lead Disney’s The Mandalorian & Grogu in May, marking a massive return to the big screen for the beloved bounty hunter.

Additionally, the actor has just joined the cast of Todd Haynes’s detective thriller De Noche, taking over a lead role originally intended for Joaquin Phoenix. He will star alongside Danny Ramirez in the noir project, which follows a hard-boiled investigator entangled in a complex romance.

He will also reprise his role as Reed Richards in Avengers: Doomsday dropping this December.

Despite the fame, he clearly hasn’t forgotten the lessons he learned from his first rescue dog about loyalty and perseverance. It is this grounded nature that makes him a fan favorite, as he continues to use his platform to remind the world that sometimes, the best support comes on four legs.
