Jon Hamm recently opened up about his complicated relationship with the 2005 holiday dramedy The Family Stone, calling it both fascinating and, at times, the worst movie he’s ever seen. In an interview with E!, the actor shared how the film has somehow become a holiday tradition in his household despite his mixed feelings.

Mostly because these are ‘required viewing’ for the holidays. It would be either Die Hard, or—and this is a weird choice, but we watch it almost every season—The Family Stone, Hamm explained.

The Mad Men star admitted that the movie’s strange mix of family drama and comedy keeps pulling him back, even when he questions its quality. I find that movie fascinating. I think it’s an inexplicably weird movie. It’s got a rock-solid, jam-packed, stacked cast, but every time I watch it, I think, ‘This might be the worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life,’ he said.

The Family Stone features a star-studded cast including Diane Keaton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, and Claire Danes. The story follows an uptight businesswoman trying to fit in with her boyfriend’s eccentric and tense family during Christmas. Hamm described the mix of personalities and holiday chaos as both overwhelming and strangely compelling.

Despite his sharp criticism, Hamm admitted that the movie ultimately grows on him. It’s unfathomable. I guess that’s what makes art, that you keep going back to it, he said.

Beyond his holiday movie rituals, Hamm is busy with major projects. He will return in the second season of the Apple TV+ thriller Your Friends & Neighbors, premiering April 3. The series follows a former hedge fund manager turned suburban thief and adds James Marsden to an already strong cast including Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn.

Hamm also recently filmed the R-rated comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass with John Slattery, directed by David Wain. He continues his role in the Taylor Sheridan drama Landman, balancing comedy and serious drama with ease.

As 2026 progresses, Hamm remains a prominent figure in entertainment, with a third season of Your Friends & Neighbors already greenlit. His candid thoughts on holiday movies show that even top actors have strange traditions they can’t explain—sometimes returning to films they claim to dislike.

Do you agree with Jon Hamm that The Family Stone is one of the strangest holiday movies ever, or do you think it deserves a spot among Christmas classics? Share your thoughts in the comments.
