One Year After Engagement Zendaya Talks Relationship Red Flags
Zendaya has spent over a year settling into the excitement of her engagement to Tom Holland, but she is still taking time to reflect on the core values that make their partnership work. During a wide-ranging discussion for Interview magazine published on February 18, the Euphoria star sat down with her frequent collaborator, Robert Pattinson.
While the two actors prepared for the release of their upcoming psychological thriller, Zendaya opened up about the specific “red flags” she looks for when navigating both her professional and personal circles. The actress revealed that one of her most reliable barometers for character is how a person conducts themselves behind the scenes.
She explained that she specifically pays attention to how people treat their crews, noting that it is far more telling than how they interact with high-profile directors or producers. For Zendaya, the true measure of a person is revealed when the cameras aren’t rolling, and she values those who treat every individual on a set with genuine kindness.
Pattinson, who recently welcomed a daughter with fiancée Suki Waterhouse, agreed that a person’s relationship with animals is a major indicator of their soul. Zendaya joked that she would easily get into a fight to defend her dog, Noon, emphasizing her belief that dogs are a good judge of character.
These insights offered a rare glimpse into the grounded perspective that has kept her relationship with Holland strong since they first went public in 2021. While she maintains high standards, Zendaya also acknowledged that human connections are rarely simple. She noted that people are layered and complex, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or mistakes that aren’t necessarily malicious.
However, she remains wary of behavior that is simply rude or mean, pointing out that someone can change significantly once you get to know them on a more profound level. The chemistry between Zendaya and Holland has long been a subject of fan fascination, and she previously credited his vibrant personality for helping her navigate her own natural shyness.
She has praised his beautiful charisma, noting that his ease with people is something she deeply admires. As the couple enters their second year of engagement, they continue to be one of the most celebrated and private pairs in Hollywood.
Looking ahead, this year is shaping up to be the busiest year of Zendaya’s career to date. She and Pattinson are set to dominate the box office together, starring in a remarkable three films this year: the A24 romantic dark comedy The Drama, which hits theaters on April 3; Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic The Odyssey in July; and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three in December.
In The Odyssey, she will actually reunite on screen with Holland, who is cast as Telemachus, while she portrays the goddess Athena. In addition to her film slate, Zendaya is currently at the center of a cultural phenomenon with the upcoming third and final season of Euphoria.
Fans are also eagerly awaiting her return as MJ in the fourth MCU Spider-Man installment, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release this summer. Between her high-concept dramatic roles and her blockbuster returns, Zendaya is firmly establishing herself as the definitive leading lady of the decade.
