Throughout his storied career, Tom Cruise defined a fine selection of action movies that have seen him – the real him – dangling out of helicopters, scaling skyscrapers, and steering powerful vehicles. During a past interview with Graham Norton, the actor revealed that he was an avid stunt performer long before his acting days.

He explained that as a child, he would perform flips off the house into the snow and race bicycles over dangerous ditches, establishing a lifelong thirst for adrenaline. As he grew older, Cruise’s passion for adventure only intensified, leading him to fall in love with fast cars, motorcycles, hiking, and climbing.

Now in his 60s, he still prefers to execute as many of his own stunts as possible, most recently demonstrating his bravery in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. He noted that during the acting process, he aims to bring everything, you know, physically and emotionally, to a character, and his decades of training allow filmmakers to put cameras where you are normally not able to.

This relentless spirit often follows him even when he isn’t on a film set. In 1996, Cruise was vacationing on the superyacht Talitha with his then-wife Nicole Kidman and their children when he noticed a nearby vessel had caught fire and was beginning to sink.

The actor immediately jumped into action, deploying a smaller boat to rescue the survivors he saw in a rubber lifeboat. He ended up saving French newspaper mogul Jacques Lejeune and his family, providing them refuge on his yacht until a patrol boat could return them to safety.

Reflecting on the heroic act, his publicist at the time remarked that Cruise did what any decent person would do, famously adding that if they were ever in trouble, they would want the actor nearby.

The yacht itself, the Talitha, has its own storied history; built in 1929, it served as a gunboat during World War II before becoming a luxury vessel for high-profile figures. As of February, Cruise is showing no signs of slowing down his professional output. He recently wrapped production on his highly anticipated collaboration with four-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

The film, titled Digger, is a dark comedy slated for release on October 2. Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, a powerful man who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is the savior of humanity before a disaster he unleashed destroys the world. The movie features an elite supporting cast, including Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and John Goodman.

Beyond his work with Iñárritu, Cruise remains a central figure in several major franchises. Following the massive success of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in May 2025, there are ongoing reports that he will reunite with director Christopher McQuarrie for a World War II thriller titled Broadsword.

Fans are also looking forward to Edge of Tomorrow 2, which is reportedly back in development under his new multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. While his ambitious plan to film a movie in actual outer space with NASA was recently reported to be on hold, his commitment to groundbreaking cinema remains his primary focus.
