Actress Forces Husband To Choose Between Her and Their Cat Leaving Fans Talking
Acclaimed actress Jessie Buckley recently found herself at the center of a humorous public debate after a past anecdote regarding her husband’s pets went viral. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast late last year, the Hamnet star jokingly confessed to an ultimatum she presented to her husband, Freddie Sorensen, when they first began dating.
She recounted that he owned two cats at the time, and one feline in particular seemed to harbor a deep grudge against her. According to the actress, the situation escalated until she felt forced to make a choice, stating, “It’s me or the cats.”
She lightheartedly concluded the story by noting, “I won,” though she remained aware that the admission might stir up some controversy among animal lovers. The story certainly made an impact, leading the actress to address the supposed feud during a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this past Thursday.
Buckley felt compelled to set the record straight, explaining that she is actually a huge fan of felines and that the previous comments were taken out of context.“I need to clarify something for all cat lovers in the world, right?” she told Fallon, appearing visibly affected by the misunderstanding.
She emphasized that she is “a lover of cats” and jokingly claimed to be “probably a quarter cat and three-quarters dog” after feeling quite distressed by the backlash. She further defended her reputation by revealing a hilarious detail about her past career aspirations.
Buckley shared that she once auditioned for the 2019 film adaptation of the musical Cats, though she did not secure the role. She described the experience as “the worst audition of my life,” explaining, “I was just like a hoof of an Irish woman leaping across and licking her paws.”
Buckley is currently riding a wave of massive success, having recently won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role at the 2026 Actor Awards for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in the Chloé Zhao-directed film Hamnet.
This performance has positioned her as the frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar at the upcoming ceremony on March 15th. Her latest film, The Bride!, which is directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, also hit theaters this week.
In this reimagining of the classic monster tale set in 1930s Chicago, Buckley plays the iconic creature opposite Christian Bale. The project marks another creative collaboration between the actress and Gyllenhaal, who previously worked together on the celebrated drama The Lost Daughter.
Beyond her current film roles, the Irish star is known for a diverse body of work, including appearances in the critically praised miniseries Chernobyl, the psychological thriller I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and the folk-horror film Men.
She continues to be a formidable presence in both independent cinema and high-profile productions, consistently praised for her intense, nuanced performances. As she navigates a busy awards season and the successful release of her new monster feature, Buckley remains one of the most exciting talents in the industry.
