Over the last few years, Aubrey Plaza has increasingly taken on the role of producer for projects like Emily the Criminal and Spin Me Round. However, she truly captured widespread attention with her performance in the second season of the hit series The White Lotus.

That role firmly cemented her reputation as an actress who can seamlessly balance sharp comedy with intense drama. As her career has progressed, audiences have gained a better understanding of her creative process and a deep appreciation for cinema.

She considers herself a true student of film, finding inspiration in a wide variety of genres and eras. When she thinks about the legends of old Hollywood, she consistently holds one star above all others.

Plaza’s admiration is reserved for the iconic Judy Garland, a performer whose influence has lasted for generations. During an interview with the Academy Awards’ publication, A.frame, she was asked to list five favorite films and immediately highlighted a Garland classic.

“Judy Garland is my number one, and the 1954 version of that movie — with Judy and James Mason — is one of my all-time favourite movies ever,” Plaza said. That 1954 film, A Star Is Born, tells a powerful, classic story about ambition, love, and the personal cost of achieving fame.

For Plaza, the connection to Garland started early in her life. “Becoming obsessed with Judy at a young age and doing a real deep dive into all of her films in my formative years had a really big impact on me,” she explained.

Garland, who rose to fame as a child in The Wizard of Oz, remains one of the most talented figures in the history of American film. Despite a life often marked by immense tragedy, Plaza views her as an absolute treasure.

“I continue to think that she’s one of the most talented people that’s ever come out of this country,” she stated. Even with a massive body of work to choose from, Plaza feels that particular musical drama had a lasting effect on her aspirations.

“A Star Is Born is one of the movies that made me want to be an actor from a young age,” she admitted. It is a surprising inspiration that has helped shape one of the most compelling actors working today.

Looking ahead, Aubrey Plaza continues to diversify her work in front of and behind the camera. She is set to star in and executive-produce the upcoming adult animated series Kevin, which is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on April 20.

The series features her as a voice actor alongside Jason Schwartzman and Whoopi Goldberg, telling a quirky story about a housecat navigating life after his owners split up. Beyond her television work, she is moving forward with a variety of ambitious film projects, including a planned biopic where she will portray the notorious Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss.

She also remains active in the fashion world, having recently been spotted attending high-profile events at Paris Fashion Week. With her production company continuing to develop new stories, fans can expect to see much more of her unique creative vision in the coming years.
