Hilary Duff (38) Lights up the Tonight Show With a Wet and Wild Performance
Hilary Duff recently captivated late-night audiences with a visually stunning return to the stage. During a visit to The Tonight Show on March 9, the 38-year-old performer showcased her latest single, Roommates, with a performance that many are calling a career highlight.
She appeared on a bedroom-themed set, initially draped across a leather chair, wearing a white gown designed to create the striking illusion of being completely soaked. The dress was a custom creation from the London-based fashion house Di Petsa, a label widely known for its innovative wet-look silhouettes.
Designer Dimitra Petsa explained that the purpose behind the unique style is to challenge the way society often expects women to conceal their natural bodily experiences.
“If you cry in public, you have to hide it. If you sweat in public, you have to hide it. If you breastfeed in public, you have to hide it,” the designer shared. “So what I wanted was to create a look that makes you look like you’re wet even though you’re not—to celebrate our wetness.”

The performance served as a direct nod to the music video for Roommates, which was released earlier this year in January. In that visual, the singer is seen navigating a literal indoor downpour while wearing a different asymmetrical yellow dress.
For the television version, the wet effect was achieved through complex stitching and fabric draping rather than actual water. Roommates is one of the standout tracks from her long-awaited sixth studio album, Luck … or Something, which finally arrived on February 20.
The song was a collaborative effort, co-written with her husband, Matthew Koma, and producer Brian Phillips. It explores the often-unspoken tensions that can arise in long-term relationships as life becomes busy and predictable.
The singer has described the track as an expression of the longing for a more spontaneous and uninhibited time in one’s life. “Roommates is a song about when life is life-ing, babe,” she noted in a press statement.
“It’s that ache for a wilder, freer time—before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs.” Beyond her musical performance, her interview with Jimmy Fallon touched on her childhood memories, including her early obsession with the Olsen twins.
She even participated in a humorous game called Sip & Sing, proving that despite her more mature musical direction, she hasn’t lost the playful spirit her fans have loved for decades.
This appearance marks a major moment in what has become a massive comeback year for the former Disney Channel star. Currently, the singer is preparing to embark on her first global arena tour in two decades, aptly named The Lucky Me Tour.
The massive concert series is scheduled to begin in June, traveling through major cities in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Mexico. Fans can also look forward to an upcoming Sam Wrench-directed documentary series that will provide a behind-the-scenes look at her return to the recording studio and her life as a mother of four.
In addition to her music, she remains active in the television world and is reportedly developing a new unscripted project focused on entrepreneurship. But for now, her music career is taking center stage.
She continues to be a staple of pop culture through various fashion and business ventures. Her latest album has already found significant success, debuting in the top ten on multiple charts following its February release.
