Hilary Duff (38) Shares Her True Feelings About ‘Gossip Girl’ 18+ Scene With Two Co-Stars
Hilary Duff has pinpointed a specific storyline from her tenure on Gossip Girl as the most unforgettable experience of her time on the show. During a recent segment of Harper’s Bazaar’s Burning Questions, the 38-year-old star reflected on her 2009 guest arc and the one scene that continues to spark conversation among fans.
When asked about her most vivid memory of playing the character Olivia Burke, she identified a particularly bold plot point involving her co-stars.“Probably the threesome was the most standout moment,” she admitted with a laugh.
The actress portrayed a high-profile movie star seeking a normal collegiate life at NYU, eventually becoming roommates with Vanessa Abrams and entering a relationship with Dan Humphrey.
This dynamic eventually led to a provocative sequence involving all three characters that became one of the teen drama’s most discussed milestones. The star recalled that she was immediately aware of how controversial the scene would be once it hit the airwaves.
“I remember being like, ‘Oh, my mom’s going to call me after this one,’” she joked, noting that the role was a significant departure from her wholesome Disney Channel roots. Even years later, the impact of her character remains so strong that she is still recognized for it in unexpected places, like a lost luggage counter in Paris.
“I went up to the lady who worked at the airline, and she’s like, ‘Are you on Gossip Girl?’” she shared during the interview. To which the actress humorously replied, “Yes. Love that’s how you know me.”
For an artist who grew up playing characters like the young witch Wendy and the relatable Lizzie McGuire, the stint on the Upper East Side served as a definitive bridge into more mature acting roles.
In addition to revisiting her television past, the singer is currently navigating a deeply personal and successful return to the music industry. Her new album, Luck… or Something, was released on February 20, marking her first full-length studio project in over a decade.
The record features the track We Don’t Talk, which she recently confirmed is a raw reflection of her ongoing estrangement from her older sister, Haylie Duff.
“It’s definitely about my sister. And just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence is not having my sister in my life at the moment,” she explained during a vulnerable conversation with CBS Mornings.
While the decision to include such a private conflict on the album was difficult, she ultimately felt it was a necessary part of her creative honesty. “I really struggled with thinking about including that on the record,” she added, eventually deciding to share it because it represents her current reality.
Produced alongside her husband, Matthew Koma, the album has already seen significant chart success, debuting at number three on the Billboard 200. The couple continues to balance their professional collaborations with a busy home life, raising their three daughters, Banks, Mae, and Townes, alongside her teenage son, Luca.
This summer, fans will have the chance to see her perform live as she embarks on the Lucky Me world tour, her first arena-scale tour in twenty years. The upcoming tour is set to visit major cities across North America, Europe, and Australia, beginning in June and running through the fall.
Beyond the stage, the actress is reportedly working on a documentary series that will chronicle her journey of returning to pop music while managing the demands of motherhood and her various business ventures. While her acting roles, like Olivia Burke, remain iconic, she is clearly focused on this new chapter of her life and career.
