Nicole Kidman recently addressed the enduring chatter surrounding her transformative performance as Virginia Woolf in the 2002 film The Hours. For years, critics and audiences alike have debated whether her Academy Award win was a result of her acting prowess or the heavy reliance on a prosthetic nose to alter her appearance.

Dismissing the negativity, Kidman remains focused on the artistry behind the role, noting that the physical changes were a deliberate collaborative decision to capture the essence of a historical figure.

“Whatever. People are always going to say whatever,” Kidman remarked, standing by the creative choices made by director Stephen Daldry and costume designer Ann Roth. She explained that she views herself primarily as a character actor who is comfortable stepping far away from her own image to serve a story.

“If that means changing my physical appearance? Of course. You have to walk differently, breathe differently, talk differently,” she added, emphasizing that the external transformation is always a natural byproduct of internal shifts.

For Kidman, the goal of any project is to disappear into a role rather than rely on her own familiar presence. She believes that the audience should be focused on the character’s internal landscape, and she is more than willing to use makeup, prosthetics, or body language to achieve that total immersion.

“I’ve been trained as a character actor, so therefore when I’m working, I’m not here to be Nicole,” she stated, underscoring a career-long philosophy that prioritizes total immersion over maintaining a specific star image.

Kidman’s career continues to thrive, as she juggles a variety of high-profile film and television projects. She currently stars as an Italian-American coroner in the gritty Prime Video investigative series Scarpetta, which officially premiered on March 11.

The show, which also stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Bobby Cannavale, has already been praised for its atmospheric dual-timeline storytelling. The actress is also stepping back into a beloved fantasy world later this year.

Practical Magic 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 cult classic, is scheduled for theatrical release on September 11. Kidman will reprise her role as Gillian Owens alongside Sandra Bullock, with new cast members like Joey King and Maisie Williams joining the magical ensemble.

In addition to these projects, Kidman’s production company, Blossom Films, is deeply involved in several new endeavors. Fans can anticipate her collaboration with Elle Fanning in the Apple TV+ adaptation of Margo’s Got Money Troubles, arriving on April 15.
