‘American Pie’ Star Reveals the Real Reason He Walked Away From Hollywood
For many people, Seann William Scott will always be remembered as the wild and loud Steve Stifler from the American Pie movies. In the early 2000s, the actor seemed to be everywhere. He appeared in comedies, big studio films and even voiced characters in animated hits. But in recent years, fans have noticed that the actor is no longer appearing in Hollywood movies as often as he once did.
Scott first became famous after starring in the 1999 teen comedy American Pie. His role as the over-the-top Stifler quickly turned him into one of the most recognizable comedy actors of that era. He later appeared in several American Pie sequels and also had roles in films like Final Destination, Dude, Where’s My Car?, and the Ice Age franchise, where he voiced the possum Crash.
Even though many expected him to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, his career did not continue at the same pace. Over the past decade, Scott has taken fewer leading roles in major films, which led many fans to wonder why he seemed to step away from the spotlight.
Some information about the actor’s finances recently became public during his divorce proceedings with his former wife, Olivia Korenberg. The two were married for four years and share a daughter. According to court documents cited by media reports, Scott earns around $110,000 every month from royalties, interest payments and dividends. This means he still receives a steady income from past work even though he is not appearing in as many movies today.
His career looked very different when he first started. During a game show appearance, Scott once revealed that he was paid only $8,000 for his first role as Stifler in American Pie back in 1999. At that time he was still struggling to make a living and even worked as a churro seller at a zoo in Los Angeles while waiting for the movie to be released.
There were also personal struggles along the way. In 2011, the actor entered rehab for health and personal issues. The exact details were not made public, but the decision showed that he needed time away from work. Despite the reputation of the characters he played, Scott has insisted that he was never much of a party person.
Another reason often mentioned is that his most famous role may have limited the types of parts he was offered later. Speaking to MTV News in 2010, Scott admitted that the character of Stifler followed him everywhere.
“I had so much fun and loved the character, [but] I don’t want to be known as that character forever,” he said at the time.
Because Stifler was such a strong personality, it became difficult for the actor to move into very different roles. In many of his early films he played similar characters, usually loud and confident party types. While audiences loved the performance, it also made it harder for casting directors to imagine him in other kinds of roles.
During the same period, some of his co-stars moved into different types of projects. Ashton Kutcher, who acted alongside Scott in Dude, Where’s My Car?, later took on more serious roles in films like The Butterfly Effect and Jobs.
Scott has still continued to work, although his projects have been less visible. In 2018 he starred in the psychological thriller Bloodline, showing a darker side of his acting. He has also remained open to returning to some of the franchises that made him famous.
More recently, he appeared in the action comedy Bad Man, which was released last year. While he may not dominate the box office like he did in the early 2000s, Scott continues to act and still earns a comfortable living from his earlier successes.
