Pedro Pascal surprised attendees and fans alike as he arrived at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday evening, March 15, debuting a strikingly clean-shaven face. The 50-year-old actor, who has become synonymous with his rugged facial hair, opted to ditch his signature mustache for the star-studded event held at the Dolby Theatre.

For his red carpet appearance, Pascal chose a fashion-forward ensemble featuring a crisp white Chanel button-down shirt. The garment was uniquely accented with a large floral embellishment on the chest and paired with high-waisted black trousers and thin-rimmed silver glasses.

While his dapper attire earned praise from style critics, it was the absence of his famous facial hair that dominated social media conversations throughout the night. The change was so significant that many viewers claimed they had to do a double-take to recognize the star.

On X, fans jokingly compared the transformation to those viral videos where a parent shaves and confuses their children. Pedro Pascal without a mustache is kinda weird, right? wondered one user.

Another user asked, Why does he look younger than his age here? Some fans even jokingly theorized that the actor had been replaced by a clone or a wax figure, a sentiment recently echoed during Jim Carrey’s appearance at the César Awards in Paris.

Organizers of that event had to clarify that it was indeed Carrey himself after rumors spread that an impersonator had taken his place. Pascal’s noticeably leaner frame also drew comments, with some followers wondering if the weight loss and new look were for an upcoming role.

Pascal has been incredibly busy recently, having dominated the box office and streaming charts over the past year. He recently starred in the romantic drama Materialists, playing a wealthy financier, and led Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps as Reed Richards.

His performance in the latter helped the film become the highest-grossing entry in that franchise’s history. The actor is currently preparing for a massive year. He is set to reprise his role as Din Djarin on the big screen in The Mandalorian & Grogu, which arrives in theaters this coming May.

Additionally, he has already completed filming for Avengers: Doomsday, where he will return as the leader of the Fantastic Four to face off against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

Between his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his continued success in The Last of Us, Pascal remains one of the busiest stars in Hollywood. During the Oscar ceremony, he maintained his usual charismatic presence while presenting the awards for Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.
